Dermal Fillers Q & A

What causes lines and wrinkles?

Just under the surface of your skin lies a layer of collagen. When you’re young, that layer is thick, giving your skin the plumpness often referred to as a “baby face.” As you age, your collagen layer thins, which creates a “loosening” effect on your skin.

Your skin also accumulates damage over the years from sun exposure and environmental toxins. The combination of thinning skin and lost collagen causes your skin to gather in small folds, especially in the areas of your face that frequently move, like around your eyes and mouth.

Your skin is also affected by the small muscles in your face. As those muscles move to enable speech, eating, and facial expressions, they pull your skin in repetitive patterns, which causes more wrinkles and folds.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is the only FDA-approved cosmetic treatment for moderate to severe frown lines and crow’s feet. It’s also the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world -- and for good reason.

Botox is made of a minute volume of a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, which is highly toxic in larger concentrations, but the amount used in Botox has an excellent safety track record.

Botox is administered via injection and works by paralyzing the targeted muscles. That prevents them from pulling your skin, giving you a smoother complexion.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is also FDA-approved to treat frown lines between your eyebrows. Like Botox, it’s also made of botulinum toxin and works by paralyzing the targeted facial muscles. It differs from Botox in structure and contains fewer proteins, however.

Some men and women find their bodies don’t respond to Botox the same way after many treatments. If Botox isn’t providing the same results you’ve come to expect, Xeomin offers an effective alternative.

How long do the results of Botox or Xeomin last?

Individual results vary, and you might also find effects vary from one treatment to the next. In general, however, you can expect Botox results to last around four months. Xeomin can last anywhere from 3-6 months.
