Why Hollywood Celebrites Love Microneedling and You Will Too

If there’s one thing you can count on when it comes to celebrities it’s that they’re always on board to try new cosmetic treatments. And if there’s a second thing you can count on, it’s their willingness to share their positive experiences with treatments that work. That’s certainly true with microneedling, an in-office treatment that’s earned top marks from A-list celebs like Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian. Even Brad Pitt gives the microneedling treatment the thumbs-up.

Microneedling helps reduce many of the signs of aging by encouraging the development of new, healthy skin while also ramping up the production of collagen deep below the skin’s surface. That means not only can you notice results soon after your treatment, but for months afterward as collagen production continues to increase.

The science behind microneedling
Microneedling works by promoting your skin’s natural healing responses. When your skin is damaged, your body kicks into full “healing mode,” helping your skin produce new cells and new collagen to repair that damage. When the tiny needles penetrate the upper layers of your skin, your body senses the controlled damage and initiates the healing process, signaling your skin to repair itself while also triggering the development of new collagen.

Why all the fuss about collagen? It’s the networks of collagen fibers that help your skin feel supple and resilient. When we’re young, our bodies make plenty of collagen, so our skin stays supple and “bounces back” after an injury. But as we get older, we produce a lot less collagen. That means it’s harder for skin to repair itself after years of sun damage, and it also means skin is more lax, and therefore more prone to showing wrinkles and other age-related damage. By promoting the development of new collagen fibers, microneedling helps your skin replenish itself so fine lines, wrinkles and small scars are naturally diminished. Plus, your skin will feel firmer and more toned as collagen production continues.

Not as scary as it sounds
Of course, the name “microneedling” doesn’t exactly conjure up feelings of coziness and comfort. But while the treatment does use tiny needles to achieve its results, the treatment isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as the name implies. In fact, most patients report only a mild stinging or prickling sensation during the actual treatment, but those sensations resolve almost immediately afterward. And if you have really sensitive skin (or you’re just worried it might hurt), Dr. Dalvi can apply a topical cream to numb your skin so you won’t feel anything.

During your treatment, Dr. Dalvi uses a special pen-shaped device that’s equipped with a series of very small, extremely fine needles. By moving the tip of the device over your skin, the needles are able to rapidly penetrate the skin’s upper layers, triggering those important healing responses necessary for skin rejuvenation. Once your treatment is complete, your skin will be a little red and you might have some very mild bleeding. Both these issues will quickly resolve, and there’s no real downtime after your session. However, it’s a good idea to avoid prolonged sun exposure to prevent stressing your skin while it heals.

Microneedling doesn’t “just” repair age-related issues like fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps reduce the appearance of large pores and scars, including acne scars, so your skin looks and feels smoother and healthier. Most patients find they achieve the best benefits by having a series of up to six microneedling treatments to encourage continued development of collagen so they can enjoy smoother, healthier-looking skin indefinitely.
